LEGO is Contagious - in a good way!

Sometimes we're approached with a request that isn't so much about the build - it's more about the photography of the final result. When we were asked to create a magazine cover we knew it would be the case this time!

'Contagious' are an editorial and advisory service for the global marketing industry. They not only assist some of the largest brands in the world with their advertising - but also create their own events and magazine.' So when their magazine decided to cover LEGO in detail this month, they knew where to come!

Example test build

After a quick chat with the team at Contagious, we quickly understood their needs for this particular build. It would have to be bold, bright and colourful - taking their logo in a new (but still LEGO-y) direction. Not only would they need a front cover, but also a back cover and the two would have to work seamlessly together. To save time and help prevent against any unwanted contagions - they'd also need us to do the studio photography. Not a problem for us of course, we've done this many times before.

After we'd agreed the outline design, a few small mockups were made to let us decide exactly how to create the build. A bas-relief design seemed best as it would give the image some much needed depth.

For this project, our images needed to look crystal clear - but not so good that we might have just rendered the images on computer!

We decided that we’d use plates on the front image but bricks on the back image - to give us chance to include some minifigs creating the final part of the logo as well.

Once built, all we needed to do was to create images with a high enough resolution to allow the option of a very big print. We’d also need to create an image that was as ‘straight on’ as possible - so that the relief was visible but not overbearing. These two factors meant two things;

A) I’d need to hire in a camera with a much higher resolution that we usually use (A Canon R5 and RF 100-500L… such a hardship!)

and

B) Our usual studio space wouldn’t cut it. We’d need much more space!

Never mind - we like a challenge - and taking full advantage of our new offices we found a simple solution. Camera at one end of the building, the model and all the lighting at the other!

You can read all about the design of the cover page on Contagious’ own blog here. Of course, if you’re interested in an eye catching image - for a magazine of anything else - then all you need do in get in touch!
